Venues

Our award winning Edinburgh Festival theatres have become widely established as the Festival's best located and known multi-space destination venues for audiences and the media alike. Located at the very heart of the modern festival in Old Town, where thousands of fringe audiences gather daily, we present an 11 space hub at Surgeons Quarter and another 9 theatres on the Royal Mile where we are very proud to continue to host a good number of the Festival's most talked about and award winning shows.

Location, Location!!

If you are looking to bring work to the festival then be sure to understand the city's geography and where the major and majority of venues are located, this can simply make or break your fringe. Companies often make the point that there is nothing worse than travelling thousands of miles to Edinburgh only to find that their venue is a 20minutes walk from the busy thoroughfares of the modern festival where the majority of audiences are seeing and looking to see shows. It's heartbreaking!

We have presented venues across the Edinburgh Fringe landscape since 1995, we've hosted venues at the bottom of Canongate at Holyrood and even as far as across the bridges in New Town and St Andrews Square. There are very good reasons why we have settled in the festival hub of Old Town! Understanding this is crucial. Audiences tend to see several shows per day and move from one venue to another, choice is constant so they don't need to cross the city to see shows when the vast majority are located a stones throw from each other.

Where to perform - The modern Fringe is very much located in 'Old Town'; this is the area where 90% of Fringe venues present work and where thousands of audience members gather to select and see work. This area stretches from the Royal Mile and then south to Bristo Square, Nicholson Street and the Pleasance. Venues here compliment each other as audiences bounce from one venue to the other. Assembly, Pleasance, theSpaceUK, Summerhall, Underbelly, Zoo and Gilded Balloon are located in this festival Fringe hub. The Fringe Society headquarters is located centrally to all these venues here too. And the world reknowned book festival which shares August with us moved from its former home at the end of George Street to the Futures Institute in Old Town only two or three years ago.

Talk to us further with regards to locations but absolutely make sure you understand the city's festival geography before you confirm your booking, don't assume, especially if you are from overseas, that looking at a google map is going to give a central option. the fringe society absolutely make this point too!
