What happens to characters when the curtain comes down? How do we know if they ever learn from their mistakes and move beyond the confines of their story, or whether they remain trapped forever in the stasis of their choices? From the devastation of the First World War trenches, Eric desperately grapples with the the mistakes of his past: whilst his sister Sheila struggles to decide who can ever truly own forgiveness and whether pity equates to complicity. As powerfully resonant and important in the wake of #MeToo as ever: is sorry ever enough?
