The Charlie Question

2017 V39

Je Ne Sais Quoi Theatre

On 7th January 2015, two gunmen entered the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and opened fire, killing 12 and injuring 11. The shooting was widely seen as an attack not only on a newspaper but also on free speech. It sparked unprecedented reactions throughout the world and on social media, where free speech supporters rallied under the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie. The Charlie Question is a semi-verbatim play exploring the event and the overwhelming responses to it, along with the ways we perceive free speech, by mixing interviews carried out in the UK and France with fictitious scenes.
