Location Location Location – the name of the game at the Edinburgh Fringe
If you are looking to bring a show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival then one of the points of feedback we get at theSpace year on year is the importance of choosing the right venue location. The hub of the festival is of course the Royal Mile, this is where thousands of theatre goers gather daily looking for shows to see. Finding a venue on the mile or a few yards from it is thought by many to be the dream ticket for performing on the fringe.
In recent years this hub has expanded into the adjoining streets, Nicholson Street, Niddry Street, Bristo Square and North and South Bridge are the busiest areas, all are located a few hundred yards from the mile. The larger venue operations tend to run venues either on the Royal Mile or in multi-space facilites located in the few hundred yards along Nicholson Street between the Royal Mile and Bristo Square.
So what else makes for a good festival? Performing in an established multi-space venue with strong historic footfall is also something stats tell us is very beneficial to companies performing at the fringe. Certainly for the first time company or a show coming for a short run its hugely beneficial to work with a venue that has a strong branding presence, multiple ticket outlets and a selection of varied performance spaces. All this offers the show a large and constant audience footfall and also gives the show more access to audiences, media and promoters. Working in the smaller stand alone environment that perhaps only offer 1 or 2 performance spaces and a single box office can make it harder for companies to market their show sensibly.
At theSpace venues we have some 8 central box office sites serving some 14 theatres, all have show poster hoardings, flyer outlets and ticket collection and sales points and are linked to both our on site press office and the fringe ticket systems. In 2014 we hosted some 91000 theatre goers during the 22 day festival.
